Lumbosacral Instability refers to weakness of the lumbosacral spine due to congenital abnormalities, trauma, metabolic, inflammatory or degenerative disorders.

All of the conditions mentioned above cause low back pain and associated symptoms and warrant the prescription of a System Loc.

PROTECTIVE:

The front shell anchors the anterior portion of the pelvis while the back shell blocks motion at the posterior pelvic structure.. By blocking these structures, protection of the soft tissues is accomplished. The element of hydrostatic lift enhances the efficacy and overall function of the orthotic system and reduces the force load placed on the lumbosacral spine and pelvis while increasing the lumbar disc space. This enhances hydration and nutrient flow to the discs themselves. This helps to re-establish and maintain the normal healthy proper intervertebral disc space. The lumbosacral structure is protected from flexion and disc failure, while the locking of the pelvic structure prevents the spine from rotation.

PREVENTIVE:

The rigid moldable shells and patented closure system reduce flexion and rotation while protecting and offloading force on the discs. By simultaneously accomplishing this, the system diminishes the possibility of injury or re-injury to the lumbosacral structures.

THERAPEUTIC:

The therapeutic effect is accomplished by the ambulatory traction aspect of the system.

Prolonged ambulatory traction (1 to 3 months) increases the length of the soft tissue as well as the vertebral body interval, enlarging the space into which the protruded, bulging, or herniated disc can read. This allows the ligaments joining the vertebral bodies to exert a centripetal force which draws the protruded disc back into its normal place.

The clam shell closure system creates hydrostatic lift, providing a gentle traction effect to the lumbar and lumbosacral spine. The patented lumbar notch also provides the patient with a sense of tactile cueing which encourages the patient to engage the postural muscles in the lumbar region, thereby preventing muscle atrophy. Ambulation is enhanced by the light weight, and relatively small size of the system. With the beneficial aspects of the ambulatory traction, the patient can begin a conservative exercise program. This allows the patient to re-strengthen the supportive postural musculature, promoting and assuring eventual and ultimate successful independence from the System Loc.
